The Map of SoundScapes
A geography of sound during confinement

Nearly 1 billion people around the world have been confined during April, due to Covid-19 social distancing policies. This has greatly reduced travel, work, shipping, construction, and transportation thus eliminating many anthropomorphic sound around the world, including the oceans. As the landscape of sound changes, how does it affect those who hear. Do people become more sensitive to sound when there is an absence of industrial dins, clangs, hums and honks? Are the birds louder? Can the birds hear each other better? A little bird told me that whales have been having more conversations.

I asked friends to send me a 1-2 minute video of their life during confinement. I received 70 videos and uploaded them onto the AUP server. I then created a time line and google maps so you can experience their real soundscapes.

How does it compare to yours?
