Moving Dirt and Tires

Making a garden is a process. One needs good dirt and a place to put that dirt. It always sounds simple but the act of moving such things when you are alone seems so daunting. It is so much easier in a team. For the pollinator garden in the Revolucion School, I ordered dirt from a local gardener. He delivered it to right outside the door of the garden. I asked a copper mine if they would donate a big tire and they did. We drove the tire into the school and had the kids move it. That was a good activity. Also they started to move the dirt with shovels and loved it. The boys happily moved the tire like tractors and then had so much fun hitting the dirt with shovels. They seemed to like the sound and the fact that they could hit it with shovels. Dirt and metal. Elemental. I think there is something to be learned. Let kids play in dirt and move heavy things. School has too much sitting down. I love with we put group work to use, have fun, and make something. Now we have a new planting area !
